Ultrasound Guided Carpal Tunnel Release
Overview
At Orthopedics Hawaii, ultrasound imaging can be used to see the bone, ligaments, tendons, and nerves in real-time. Ultrasound-guided procedures such as Carpal Tunnel release and Trigger Digit release are possible in the office with only local anesthetic.
Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Sam Chen is the only person in Hawaii and 1 of 3 surgeons on the West Coast performing this procedure. Local anesthetic is used to numb the area and the procedure takes several minutes.
In addition to Oahu residents, we have patients fly in from the neighboring islands and the US mainland for the procedure.
Release vs Surgery
Carpal tunnel surgery relieves the pain, numbness, and weakness due to irritation of the median nerve. Trigger finger surgery relieves the mechanical blockage of the thumb and finger tendons. Using Ultrasound assistance for these procedures allows for:
Faster Recovery - The ultrasound procedure is considerably less invasive. Only a small incision is made without the need for stitches. Many patients return to work in several days.
Convenience - Patients are able to drive themselves home since sedation and general anesthesia is not necessary.
In-office Procedure - Both procedures can be performed in the clinic.
